Human-in-the-loop
Human-in-the-loop, often abbreviated as HITL, is an approach to AI system design where a human is involved in the decision-making process at key points — reviewing, approving, or correcting AI outputs before they are acted upon. Rather than giving the AI full autonomy, human-in-the-loop systems build in checkpoints where a person can verify, override, or redirect the AI's work. This approach matters because many AI-driven decisions carry real consequences — financial, medical, legal, or operational — and organizations aren't always ready to trust AI to make those decisions alone. Human-in-the-loop provides a safety net during the period when organizations are building confidence in their AI systems, and it remains essential for high-stakes decisions where errors are costly or irreversible. Human-in-the-loop can be implemented at different stages. Some systems require human approval before every action (high oversight), while others only flag edge cases or low-confidence predictions for review (exception-based oversight). In AI agent workflows, human-in-the-loop might mean requiring approval before an agent executes a financial transaction, sends a communication to a customer, or modifies a production system. The level of human involvement typically depends on the risk level of the task and the maturity of the AI system. For enterprises, designing the right level of human oversight is a governance decision. Too much human involvement negates the efficiency gains of AI. Too little creates unacceptable risk. Organizations in regulated industries often start with heavier human oversight and gradually reduce it as they build evidence that the AI system performs reliably within defined boundaries.
